Alright, I’ll see what I can achieve by playing around with the settings. I’ve already tried factory-resetting the router and updating it’s firmware but it’s still not working so :/
Other than that, I do have one other small issue that isn’t too important; Is there any way to reduce the noise in the headphone ports/speaker output?
In the headphone port, whenever I play any form of audio, I hear a pop and the output is really noisy. It doesn’t matter if the audio is muted, as long as something is «playing» in the background, the noise is there.
With the speakers it’s a slightly different story; it emits a small amount of background noise as long as the laptop is turned on and booted into linux, and it’s generally not noticeable. until I plug in a device, say a USB memory stick, into the USB port; then I start to hear a high pitched «mosquito noise» that’s giving me a headache >. And while I can get the internal analog microphone to work, I can’t get the external audio input to respond to anything (using a standard 4-pin 3.5 mm connector)

Re: Asus X205TA hardware support in Ubuntu
Sadly right now the noise is still a known shortcoming of the kernel’s support for our audiochip. The developer that wrote tentative fixes for our audiochip (Pierre Bossart) tried to write a patch to solve this behaviour (that he himself was also experiencing for a similar device) but ultimately was unsuccesful in doing so.
As for the external audio input: the x205ta doesn’t have an external mic input*. If you mean an external usb soundcard: if you’re using my kernel then the necessary module(s) for it may not be included. If you PM me some info (lsusb) on the device I might be able to add them.
*edit: Now that I look at the headphone jack, the symbol seems to indicate it’s both mic input and headphones output. I’ve never used an external mic on it but I’m willing to bet that if it doesn’t work that’s probably also a kernel shortcoming that hasn’t been addressed. Maybe someone else has experience with using the external mic input ?

Aww that’s unfortunate :/ I really hope the noise issue gets fixed somehow, because I generally connect my laptop to speakers, which makes the weird popping sound and background noise really noticable.
Also no I didn’t mean using an external sound card, I was talking about the internal sound card, it had external microphone support (if you use a headset with a TRRS jack) on Windows;
and on Linux from the Pulseaudio control panel I can select «External Microphone (unplugged)» but it doesn’t have any audio coming out of it with my headset connected.
Thanks for trying to help; I’ll try looking around on the internet to see if someone else has a solution to these issues

If you have the change, try Linux out on a different computer first.
Having said that. If you’d really like to try it out, and you only have access to a Windows PC to begin with, the easiest way is to grab one of my zip-files on ftp://x205ta.myftp.org:1337 (I suggest Xubuntu 16.04) and extract it to a fat32 formatted usb stick.
Before you can boot the usb stick you need to disable «secure boot» in your bios (use F2 repeatedly during boot to enter bios).
Now you can boot from the usb stick: poweroff laptop; put in usb stick; power on laptop and start pressing ESC repeatedly; choose usb stick.
When the laptop has booted from the usb stick there is a link on your desktop to start the installation.
If you decide to install linux only and ditch windows altogether the process is pretty straightforward from there on (watch some youtube clips to see what the process is like). If you want to keep windows you need to repartition the internal ssd first to create some room for linux next to the windows partition(s), which is a pain in the ass and you’ll end up with 2 OS’s that constantly are in need of extra free space, so I would advise against it.
Hi! Is this link dead now? I’ve been trying to get linux up and running on this again and haven’t had any luck. I do remember I was able to get it installed using the method above; however, I reverted it back to windows 10 to give to a friend. Now that he’s given it back, I’d love to have it on linux again! Hopefully I’m not reviving a dead post. If I am, I apologize!

I’ve changed to an http server (instead of ftp) a while back. The best way to get there is to check out one of the links to my posts in my signature as I try to keep those up-to-date. I’ve also updated the link in the post you referred to though, thanks.

I can testify that HHH’s script works marvelously well with Ubuntu 18.04 — the only one I’ve tried it with. There are still occasional issues with this machine, as there always have been, but it is so nice to boot up with wifi, sound, and bluetooth all working. Can’t thank HHH enough for all of his hard work on this!

Re: Asus X205TA hardware support in Ubuntu
I’ve updated my kernel (v35) to 4.17.6 and added Con Kolivas’ ck-patchset. This should (in theory) give a slightly smoother/better desktop experience. I’ve also added the boot parameter intel_idle.max_cstate=5 by default as it is the lowest possible cstate that still allows for deep (s0i3) sleep state, and it seems to give me fewer freezes.

Re: Asus X205TA hardware support in Ubuntu
One more round of applause for harryharryharry, if you please ladies and gentlemen. Seriously, he deserves thanks.
Since I am one of (no doubt many) X205TA owners who benefit from his work, I wanted to help him help us all.
I cooked up a shell script to remove older versions of his kernel from Debian/Ubuntu based Linux distributions. Actually, now that I think of it, I believe all the commands used exist in every linux distribution.
It’s why I like to go «low-level» and use the shell only, and not other interpreters like perl or python. So it is portable.
It checks if you have a kernel NOT made by him, i.e. not named -sound anything.
If you do, it runs, if you don’t it exits!
Then it reports which of his kernels you have, and offers to erase them so you can install the newer ones of course!
If you answer yes, it does. Say no, and it exits, without touching anything!
And it leaves written reports named files-to-remove.txt (which files it found) and removed-files.txt (which files it removed) in the same directory where you run it.
Obviously you must have write access to do so. I dogfooded it. Tested on my own system. Works great here. I do NOT expect any errors, but to paraphrase what it says in the script, use at your own discretion. You are welcome to read my (ugly often hacky) script, if you want to see what it does. Please don’t learn my bad habits, if you want to write elegant correct scripts, read harryharryharry’s. I try to document inside the script with #comments or $echo, and more rarely with a readme, but it often lacks structure. It’s stream of code consciousness, so to say.

Re: Asus X205TA hardware support in Ubuntu
After having used both an Ubuntu and an Antergos ISO of Harry^3’s on my X205TA, I have run into some trouble trying to install the Mint 19 ISO.
The OS booted up just fine from a USB key, but the installer threw some errors during while selecting the partitioning options in the GUI. Something about not being able to modify mounted drives I think. Unfortunately I didn’t write them down, thinking that I would just be booted back into my Antergos installation. This turned out to not be the case. Instead, the BIOS screen apprears immediately on startup, and I am returned right back into it upon exiting. No devices are visible in the boot order screen, so I am unable to reboot from disk or USB. It throws a ‘Not found’ error when trying to boot up in an EFI shell, and a ‘locate simple file system protocol failly’ error when I attempt to perform an Easy Flash.
Have I messed up my drive beyond all recognition, or is there something else I could try? Any help anyone would be willing to offer would be greatly appreciated!

I’m not 100% clear on some details.
By BIOS screen, do you mean the screen that comes up when pressing Escape on bootup? Mine shows I think UEFI and ubuntu, presumably ubuntu boots in Compatibility mode, and I have no EFI OSes? Not sure if USB shows up here, I think it should, but I’d have to check. (working from memory here, I rarely have a need to see it, and don’t want to reboot just for that right now)
Also can you get into the BIOS itself? I think with F2? I guess you did since Easy Flash is in there as I recall. This is encouraging, at least the BIOS should be OK. I suspect the internal eMMC flash has wrong info. from the failed install, and is unbootable. This seems most likely. Especially the EFI partition. The not found error suggests the EFI partition is messed up too, not just your Antegros install. Hope you had a separate /home partition, so you don’t lose anything during reinstall. And when you say «boot order screen» when does this appear? Pressing Escape, or the BIOS (F2). I think both should show USB, if it is recognized, but worth checking both in case only one does.
So the first step is can you boot from USB prepared with H^3 script. You may have already tried this, but it’s worth mentioning: The USB key must already be inserted before boot, otherwise it won’t show! Also, maybe test it to see if it is bootable? Would it boot, even to the first installer screen, on another EFI system? I think so, but that’s for others with more experience to say.
Another possible fix: I recall discussion here that the X205TA can also boot from SD cards, if they are prepared similar to H^3 script. In case USB is not recognized.
Is it possible the BIOS or eMMC is corrupt? I hope not, that is either hard or impossible to recover. The BIOS is merely hard, find the right BIOS in Asus’ confusing site (they have like 20 versions of X205TA BIOS, and flashing the wrong one makes things worse! Check what your BIOS says, following their instructions, and only download/flash if you’re sure it’s correct!). Link to BIOS downloads: Not found on main Asus Support Page! Thanks ASUS! Ashamed you made this laptop, and hiding/disavowing it?
Pick correct BIOS after checking what you have currently! Don’t let the page fool you, there is more than 1 version! Click «Show all» near the bottom! Shoddy ASUS webpage design. Why hide other versions, to trick people into downloading the wrong BIOS? What if the top result isn’t yours? How does their webserver know? It won’t, only you do! Mine happens to be version 212, for a 205TA. Yours may differ. The FAQ how to check is accurate, if I recall: F2, then F12, read lower right corner.
No idea how to diagnose/fix eMMC, other than wiping after boot from USB/SD/etc.

Hey, so a lot has been happening to my Asus Laptop(Q501LA). So I was playing. minecraft at the time and suddenly I get this blue screen that says ‘ Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some error info and then we’ll restart for you. 0% Complete’ about a minute after it displayed this, the screen went black and the BIOS screen pops up. So, normally with BIOS, if you hit save and exit, it will let you continue on to the loading screen. Nope. It went back to the BIOS screen. I have tried everything. Resting BIOS to default settings, and tweaked with other things on BIOS. Nothing. So now, I am stuck on BIOS and cannot get to the windows login screen, or anything at all.
I also just removed and installed the battery and it is still doing this. Anyone know what the problem may be?
Update: Also removed and installed the Drive. Still stuck in BIOS.

ASUS-PRO P450CA-XH51
Post by Joe2Shoe » Sun Mar 04, 2018 7:55 pm
A friend just gave me an ASUS-PRO P450CA-XH51 laptop in pristine condition, with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.
Intel i5 3337U 1.80GHz CPU, 6GB RAM, Crucial 250GB SSD, Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000.
Has anyone here installed LM MATE or Cinnamon 18.3 64-bit onto one of these machines?
I just can’t stand Windows. period.
I will boot-up a LM MATE 18.3 64-bit Live USB and give it a whirl.
Many thanks for all assistance.
